Calgary Photographers Talk About The Session

As a documentary wedding photographer (also known as reportage wedding photography), I think engagement sessions should be a good time, and feel more like a date than a photo shoot. When we prepare for an engagement session there is a lot to consider. Getting to know each couple, their story, where they like to hang out, and what they like to do helps me to choose a place that connects their life and personalities to the images. A couple that loves nature, hiking and country life needs a scene to match, while a couple who loves urban living, craft beer and hole in the wall restaurants needs an entirely different spot.

When choosing the location obviously lighting is #1, but colours are also a huge factor in what makes a great scene. Colour and geometry are also key to telling an authentic love story. So we have the perfect place, next it’s all about connection and they have a beautiful one. After a few bad storms and a rainy spring forcing us to reschedule a few times, we were rewarded with an absolutely glorious sunset! Rianna and Scott were so much fun to hang out with, and their love story is the stuff fairy tales are made of.

Their Love Story

To be a great documentary wedding photographer you have to get to know the couple. I asked Rianna to share her love story with me. Rianna wrote:

“My fiancée and I started dating when he was in grade 7, and I was in grade 8. 8 years later (coming on 9 years now) after I graduated with my teaching degree 4 years after high school, I decided to move to London England for my first year of teaching, and to travel! Scott, my fiancée, couldn’t come because he has a great job at home. We knew the distance would be difficult, but we also knew it wouldn’t change our relationship!

Sure enough, he came to visit me in London in October right before I left for a month trip to hike to Mount Everest Base Camp. We booked a 3 day trip to Paris while he was here, and on the second night he got down on one knee under the Eiffel tower at night, and asked me to be his wife!!! A week or so later, he flew back to Canada and I left for my hike to Everest. I was only was able to talk to him a couple of times that month, and had to leave my beautiful ring at home in London! Both were as hard!! All the distance has only made us a happier couple together, and I couldn’t be more thankful to have my fiancée and best friend since I was 13, waiting for me to arrive back home this February!”

Since arriving home, Rianna and Scott have settled into their new home and are enjoying life together.
